Getting started
Your account & roles
On Rentor, you have one account for everything — and you can wear more than one hat on it. Rent a home, run a rental business, offer services, host stays: it's all the same sign-in.
One account, many hats
When you first create an account, you're a Member — a regular browsing account with no special role yet. As a member you can already do a lot: search the marketplace, save searches and get alerts, book and pay for short stays, request viewings, and hire service providers.
A member has a small dashboard of their own. Sign in and you land on a home page with a Where do you want to live? search, the places you looked at recently, your saved searches, and a Choose your role to unlock more card. Its sidebar holds the few pages a member owns: Refunds, Home Services (hire a provider and follow your bookings and orders), Notifications, Invite & earn, Profile, Privacy & data and Help & support. The viewings you've requested are tracked from your account page, or My viewings in the account menu.
When you're ready to do more, you add a role — and each role you hold becomes a hat you can switch into at any time. Sign-up asks What brings you here?; if you skipped it, the same question is always under "Become a landlord or partner" in the account menu, and the cards below cover the account hub's version of the same choice.
The account hub
Open the account menu at the top of any page and choose Profile (it is also Profile in every dashboard sidebar). This is the one place to manage everything about you; the full tour is in Your profile. In short:
- What you do on Rentor — the roles you hold, shown as badges, plus cards for taking on new ones.
- Your viewings — track or cancel the property viewings you've requested.
- Overview — your photo, full name, username, a short bio and your town, and How others see you, your public page rendered exactly as a visitor gets it. To change the email tied to your account, contact support.
- Phone number — on a card of its own, because password resets and security codes are texted to it. Changing it asks for a little proof — see Password, 2FA & security.
- Identity & verification — your National ID and KRA PIN. These are encrypted at rest (AES-256) and never shown in full — you'll only ever see a masked version like ••••1234. Adding them early speeds up verification when you take on a role. The KRA PIN is optional until you need tax filing as a landlord or host.
- Security — your password, two-factor authentication and the devices signed in as you. See Password, 2FA & security.
- Privacy — the switches that decide what your public page shows (photo, full name, join year, bio, town, hidden role pages, search-engine indexing). Ratings and reviews are always shown.
- Saved, Likes, History and Activity — what you hearted (including service providers) with Go-to providers and Book again, what you liked, your past homes, trips, orders and viewings, and the last 90 days of notifications and account events.
- Appearance — light or dark, or follow your device.
- Tips and guided tours — switch the short walkthroughs off, or tap Show me around again to replay the tour for your role.
- Privacy & data — download a copy of your data or delete your account. Choose Manage data. See Your privacy & data rights.
- Sign out — ends your session on this device. You can sign back in any time.
Adding a role
Four roles are self-service — you can opt in whenever you like:
- Landlord — list property and collect rent by M-Pesa.
- Agency — manage properties for landlords. You'll enter your agency's business name first, then choose Create agency.
- Service provider — advertise your services and get booked.
- Host — lease a place and re-rent it as short stays or a sublet. See Becoming a host.
Two roles come by invitation instead: Tenant (your landlord assigns or invites you to a unit — or confirms you when you add a home you already rent) and Caretaker (a landlord or agency invites you to look after a building).
Opting in takes seconds — you only verify once you actually start. For example, a new landlord can set everything up first, and completes verification before publishing listings.
Your first role becomes your default, so you'll land on that dashboard when you sign in. If you already have a role and add another, your default stays put — the new hat is simply added.
Switching between your hats
Once you hold more than one role, the account menu in the dashboard's top bar shows who you're currently Acting as:
- Open the account menu (your name and role badge, top right).
- Under Switch role, pick the hat you want — the dashboard reloads as that role.
- Want another hat? Choose + Add a role and pick from the same cards as the account hub.
Each role has its own dashboard, so a landlord who also rents a home elsewhere simply flips between the landlord view and the tenant view.
On the phone app: members get Listings, Saved, Discover and More along the bottom. More is where you hire services, see your viewings, bookings and trips, and — under Do more on Rentor — become a landlord, agency, provider or host in a tap. If you hold more than one role, Switch to … view sits near the top of More. Tap your profile card there to edit your details, including your National ID and KRA PIN.
