The M-Pesa wallet

The wallet turns your M-Pesa business account from receive-only into a full till: see your real balance, send money out, and pull back a payment sent to the wrong person.

What the wallet is (and isn't)

Landlords, agencies, hosts and service providers find Wallet under Money in the sidebar. It shows the balance of your own M-Pesa shortcode — your Paybill or Till. This is your money in your account; Rentor never holds it. When you send a payment, it leaves your shortcode directly.

Before you can send, outbound payments must be enabled on your M-Pesa account. If they aren't, the wallet says "Outbound payments aren't enabled yet" and points you to Payout settings — the card where you set up M-Pesa in the first place (see Collecting rent). Open M-Pesa there and fill in the two optional fields under Enable outbound payments: your initiator name and security credential, which Safaricom or your M-Pesa dealer gives you. They are separate from the keys that let you receive money.

Safaricom only allows sending money out from a one-account paybill. An ordinary multi-account collection paybill can receive rent perfectly well but can't power the wallet — ask Safaricom which kind yours is before you chase the credentials.

Checking your balance

The balance card shows your shortcode and the last-fetched balance. Tap ↻ Refresh to ask M-Pesa for the live figure — it takes a few seconds. If money is on its way out, you'll see it as "pending out".

A paybill holds its money in more than one M-Pesa sub-account, and the card lists them. The headline figure is the Utility account — marked "collections in, payouts out" — because that's where tenants' payments land and where your payouts are drawn from. The Working account is the bank-facing one, for deposits and withdrawals; you move money between the two on Safaricom's M-Pesa portal, not on Rentor.

If M-Pesa refuses a balance request, the card tells you what it said — most often a problem with the initiator name or security credential.

Sending money

  1. In Send money, choose To a person (B2C — name and phone number) or To a business (B2B — name, Paybill/Till, and an account reference for paybills).
  2. Enter the amount in KES and a short purpose, e.g. Provider payment. A note is optional.
  3. Paying several people at once? Tap + Add another recipient (bulk) and repeat. The running total shows at the bottom.
  4. Tap Review & send →.
  5. Confirm with your security code — sending money always asks for a fresh two-factor code, even mid-session. See Password, 2FA & security.

A payment normally shows Pending approval first — Rentor's team checks it before the money leaves, and you'll see the status update when it's released. If auto-approve limits have been agreed for your account, payments inside them go out immediately ("sent (auto-approved)"); anything above the per-payment or daily limit still waits for approval.

Payment statuses in plain words: Pending approval (waiting to be released), Approved and Processing (on their way), Completed (delivered), Failed (M-Pesa couldn't deliver it), Rejected (not released; the reason is shown), Cancelled.

Your statement

The Statement section lists everything in and out of your shortcode:

  • Filter by All, Money in or Money out, and by date range.
  • The totals line shows money in and out for the period.
  • Download the statement any time with ⬇ PDF or ⬇ CSV — handy for your accountant.

Reversing a payment

Sent money to the wrong number? Act fast:

  1. Find the payment in your statement and tap Reverse.
  2. Give a short reason (e.g. Sent to the wrong phone number) and tap Continue →.
  3. Confirm with your security code.

Reversals must be requested within 48 hours. After approval, M-Pesa attempts to pull the money back — it can decline if the recipient has already withdrawn it. You'll see the progress on the entry: reversal requested, processing, Money returned, or declined — and you're notified either way.

On the phone app: Wallet is under More → Money, with the same balance card, Send money form (To a person / To a business, Add another for a batch — one two-factor code covers the whole batch), statement filters and Reverse this payment. The statement's PDF and CSV buttons open in your phone's browser to save or share. If outbound payments aren't enabled yet, the screen lists what's missing and Add initiator credentials takes you to Receive payments to add them.

Treat the wallet like your till drawer: the two-factor step and the 48-hour reversal window exist to protect real money. Never share your codes with anyone.
