For tenants
Messages, forums & notices
All communication in your rental life happens inside Rentor — the neighbourly chat, the official announcements, and private conversations with your landlord. Your personal phone number and email are never shared with anyone.
The Messages page
Open Messages from the side menu. At the top you can switch between "Property channels" and "Direct messages". Property channels are per building — if you rent in more than one place, each has its own.
Every property has two channels:
- "Property forum" — open discussion for everyone at this property.
- "Official notices" — announcements from the landlord or agency.
The property forum
The forum is the building's common room: ask about the water schedule, flag the noisy gate, arrange things with neighbours. Anyone at the property can post and reply — messages show the sender's name and their role (tenant, landlord, agency), and replies thread neatly underneath.
Official notices
Notices are the serious channel — things like a rent adjustment, planned repairs, or formal communication about the tenancy. Three things make them different:
- Only your landlord or managing agency can post them. The page says so plainly: "Only your landlord or managing agency can post official notices."
- They're pinned — marked with a "Pinned" tag and highlighted so they don't scroll away.
- They have read receipts. The moment you open a notice, it's marked as read on your side — and the sender can see how many recipients have read it. No more "I never saw it" arguments, in either direction. So do open them.
Direct messages
Switch to "Direct messages" for a private 1:1 thread between you and your landlord. It's the right place for anything personal — a payment plan, a question about your lease, giving a heads-up that you plan to move. Only the two of you can read it.
Never miss a notice
Two safety nets work for you:
- The notification bell. Every notice and direct message drops a notification — the bell at the top of your dashboard, and the full list on the Notifications page.
- An SMS nudge. If a notice or direct message sits unread for a while, Rentor can send a short SMS to your registered number telling you something is waiting in the app.
Your privacy
Everything goes through the platform, by design. People you haven't transacted with — a landlord you merely enquire with, other tenants on the forum — never see your phone number or email address. Your own landlord naturally has the contact details your tenancy was set up with, but conversations still stay on the platform where both of you have a record. Read more in Privacy & your data.
On the phone app: Messages lives under the More tab — same forums, same notices, same private threads, with notifications on your phone.
