How everything works.

Every feature explained properly — for tenants, landlords, agencies, hosts and service providers.

Getting started

Rentor on your phone

The Rentor app for Android and iPhone puts your day-to-day work in your pocket. You sign in with the same email and password you use on the website — it is one account everywhere.

Getting the app

Rentor is on Google Play for Android and on the App Store for iPhone. Search for Rentor, or use the store badges at the foot of rentor.co.ke — they are on every public page, under Get the app.

You can look around before you sign in. The app opens on Explore, with four segments across the top — Homes, Stays, Services and Discover — and a Sign in button in the corner. Browsing is open to everyone; the app asks you to sign in only when you try to save something, like a video, book a provider, or see a provider's contact. Sign in at that moment and it carries on with what you were doing.

The tabs along the bottom

Once you're signed in, the bar along the bottom matches what you do on Rentor. Each role's bar carries its main job:

  • Just browsing (a member): Listings for rentals, nightly stays and student housing (a small Rentals | Stays | Student switch at the top flips between them), Saved for your shortlist and saved searches, Discover for the video feed, and More.
  • Tenant: Home, Explore, Discover, Payments (pay rent by M-Pesa and see your ledger), Maintenance (report and follow repairs), and More.
  • Landlord or agency: Home (your overview), Properties, Tenants, Discover and More. Agency staff only see the areas their role allows. Maintenance is one tap away from Home and from Properties.
  • Service provider: Home (your jobs), Work, Schedule, Discover and More. Work is where you sell from: an Add a service or product button at the top, then your catalogue, bookings, profile and showcase, and how you get paid.
  • Host: Home, Places, Stays, Discover and More. Stays gathers your nightly listings, reservations, sublets and what you earn, with a List a stay button at the top.
  • Caretaker: Buildings (your assigned properties and open issues), Readings (the monthly meter walk), Repairs, Messages, and More.
  • Sales rep: Overview, Leads, My Day (the field log), Clients, Earnings and More. Sales partners get the same bar without My Day.

Landlords, agencies, providers and hosts also get a Jump to row on Home — the handful of things you do most, such as Add property, Rent & payments, Bookings or Reservations.

If you hold more than one role on the same account, switching roles changes the whole app to that role's tabs.

The More tab

More is your home base on the phone. From top to bottom you will find:

  1. A search box — "Search the menu — rent, wallet, viewings…" — the quickest way to anything below.
  2. Your profile card — name, email, your role, and where your verification stands. Tap it for your account details.
  3. My reputation — your average rating and how many ratings you have.
  4. Switch to … view — if you hold other roles, jump between them here.
  5. Do more on Rentor — become a landlord, service provider, agency or host straight from the phone.
  6. Ask Rentor — the built-in assistant.
  7. Your role's menu, in groups: Browse (Homes, Stays, Services, Discover, Saved, My trips), then your working groups — Manage or Work, Money, People & Messages, Reports & Insights — and Settings & Account, which holds Notifications, Help & support, Privacy & data and Email notifications.
  8. Security — two-factor authentication, unlocking with your face or fingerprint, Where you're signed in, and your password. See Password, 2FA & security.
  9. Appearance — light, dark, or follow your phone.
  10. Help & Info — News, What's new, Search help, FAQs, Tutorials, Documentation (this guide), Pricing, Contact us, Careers, About Rentor, Check for updates, Terms of Use and Privacy Notice.
  11. Sign out, and on the very last line the version of the app you are running.

Notifications live behind the bell at the top, with an unread count on the Notifications row. To get them on your lock screen as well, open Notifications and tap Turn on — see Notifications & email preferences.

Updates arrive by themselves

Most improvements reach the app without a visit to the store. When you open Rentor it checks for an update, and if there is one you see a brief Updating Rentor screen before carrying on. Come back to the app after a while away and it does the same, quietly. If you only stepped out for a moment it will not restart under you — you get an Update ready · Restart now pill to tap when it suits you. You stay signed in throughout.

More → Check for updates tells you on the spot whether you are on the newest version. Bigger changes still come as an ordinary update from Google Play or the App Store. See Release notes & version numbers.

When the network drops

Rentor needs a connection to move money, send a message or make a booking. When the signal goes, most lists — your tenants, maintenance jobs, messages, notifications, invoices — keep showing the last data the app saved, under a note saying so. Pull down to refresh once you're back in coverage.

What isn't sold inside the app

Nearly everything on the website is in the app too: verification documents, adding places and sublets as a host, provider invoices, the landlord import, your ID and KRA details. The exceptions are about money paid to Rentor, because of app store rules:

  • Plans. On an iPhone, you subscribe inside the app and Apple bills your Apple Account — manage or cancel it in your Apple settings, and use Restore purchases on a new phone. On Android, the app shows your plan and what each plan costs, but doesn't sell them.
  • Listing boosts and SMS credits aren't sold in the app on either platform. Boosts that come with your plan can still be used from the phone.

Rent, deposits, service bookings and stays are different: those are real-world payments between people, and they stay on M-Pesa, right there in the app.

Where something can't be done from the phone, the app tells you on screen instead of hiding it — so you always know where you stand.

One account, everywhere

Everything syncs through your one Rentor account: a reading you key on the phone appears on the landlord's web dashboard; a booking you accept on the web shows in the app. If you are new to accounts and roles, start with Your account & roles.
