How everything works.

Every feature explained properly — for tenants, landlords, agencies, hosts and service providers.

For service providers

Getting paid

On Rentor, your money goes to you — not into a platform pot. Clients either pay you directly, or pay through Rentor into an M-Pesa account that is yours.

Two ways a client pays you

  • Directly — cash, or M-Pesa to your own number, when the job is done or the order arrives. Nothing to set up. Tick Payment received (cash / M-Pesa direct) when you complete the job or mark the order delivered, or the client marks it paid on their side.
  • Through Rentor, by M-Pesa prompt — the client taps Pay, approves the prompt on their phone, and the money lands in your own Paybill or Till. This needs the one-off set-up below. Sellers: customers are offered Pay now with M-Pesa at checkout only once this is live.

Either way the booking or order shows a green Paid badge, and Rentor never holds your money along the way.

Connecting your own M-Pesa

You need a Safaricom Paybill or Till (Buy Goods) number with Daraja API access — a personal M-Pesa line cannot be connected. Safaricom issues the keys through its Daraja portal.

  1. On the website, open Earnings under Money and find the Payout settings card. On the phone app, open More → Money → Receive Payments.
  2. Tap M-Pesa. If you have not switched on two-factor security yet, Rentor asks you to do that first — see Password, 2FA & security.
  3. Enter your Paybill / Till number, its Type, and your Daraja consumer key, consumer secret and Passkey (STK).
  4. Confirm with your security code and submit.

Our team verifies the details and activates the account; you get a notification when it is live, and the row then reads Live — clients can pay you on Rentor. Until then, clients simply pay you directly.

The same card has a Card & bank row for connecting your own Jenga merchant account. Bookings and orders are paid by M-Pesa or directly today, so most providers can leave it for later.

The wallet — sending money out

Your Wallet turns M-Pesa from receive-only into a full till. From it you can send money out:

  • Pay a person (for example a casual worker after a big job).
  • Pay a business.
  • Make bulk payments in one go.

Payouts leave your own shortcode and are protected with a two-factor security check before anything moves. To switch them on, fill in Enable outbound payments (optional) — your Daraja initiator name and security credential — when you connect your M-Pesa. The wallet works the same way for landlords; the full walkthrough is in The M-Pesa wallet.

Work you arranged off-platform

For jobs agreed outside a Rentor booking, send a branded invoice and record the payment when it arrives — see Invoicing clients. Remember: Rentor does not collect or hold funds for invoices; the client pays you directly.

Keeping track

Two tools keep your numbers straight without a notebook:

  • Earnings — what you have earned from completed jobs for any period, with a PDF or CSV statement to download.
  • Reports — financial and operational reports you can preview on screen and download as PDF or CSV, whenever you need them.
  • Monthly report by email — opt in and last month's summary is emailed to you automatically at the start of each month.

On the website, Earnings is under Money, and Reports is under Growth with the monthly-report switch on the same page.

On the phone app: the Work tab has a Getting paid row that shows at a glance whether clients can pay you through Rentor. The rest is under More → Money — Invoices, Getting paid, Wallet, Refunds, Receive Payments and Card & Bank — with Reports and Monthly Report under Reports & Insights. Billing & Plans sits under Settings & Account.

Your subscription and add-on purchases (boosts, SMS credits) are separate from your earnings — those are things you buy from Rentor. See Your subscription, trial & boosts.
