Booking a viewing
Found a place you like? Book a viewing online — it's free, takes a minute, and the landlord confirms your slot so you never travel for nothing.
Before you book
You'll need to be signed in with a verified email. Any signed-in account can book a viewing — you don't need any special role. If you haven't verified your email yet, enter the code from the "Verify your email" banner first (see Creating your account).
Book step by step
- Open the listing and find the unit you want under "Available units".
- Tap "Book a viewing" — on that unit's row, in the booking panel, or in the bar at the bottom on a phone.
- If you're not signed in, you'll be taken to the sign-in page first.
- Pick a date, then choose one of the available times. Every property has viewing hours (most use the default, Monday–Saturday 8 AM–6 PM; some landlords set their own), and the form only offers times inside them — so you can't accidentally ask for a 9 PM visit.
- Optionally add a note for the landlord — for example, "I can also do weekday evenings".
- Tap "Request viewing".
You'll see "Viewing requested!" — your request has gone to the landlord, who will confirm your slot. Some properties turn on instant confirmation (marked ⚡ on the form): there the button reads "Book viewing", your in-hours booking is confirmed on the spot, and you see "Viewing confirmed!" — no waiting. Tap "View my bookings" to follow it — if you hold a role on Rentor, your viewings live on your dashboard's Viewings page; as a member they're under My viewings in the account menu (or Your account → Your viewings); on the phone app they're under More → My viewings (Viewings if you're a tenant).
What the statuses mean
- Requested — waiting for the landlord to confirm your slot.
- Approved — confirmed! Put it in your diary; Rentor will remind you anyway.
- Rejected — the landlord couldn't do that time. Book again with a different slot.
- Completed — the viewing happened.
- Cancelled — the viewing was called off.
- No-show — the viewing was confirmed but you didn't arrive.
Need a different time? Propose it — don't cancel
Plans change, and you don't have to throw the booking away. On your Viewings page, tap "Change time" (or "Propose new time"), pick a new slot and say briefly why. The landlord can accept or decline — and your original slot stands until they accept, so a confirmed viewing never silently disappears. Landlords can propose a new time to you the same way (say their caretaker is only free later); you'll get a notification and can accept or decline it.
A few sensible limits: one proposal is live at a time (a newer one replaces it), you can't move a viewing that starts in under 2 hours (cancel instead), and when a new time is accepted your 24-hour and 2-hour reminders reset to the new slot automatically.
Message the landlord about the booking
Every booking has its own conversation thread — tap "Message about this booking" on the viewing to ask about parking, directions, the gate code, or anything else. Both of you are notified of replies, your phone number stays private, and the thread closes a week after the booking wraps up. The same booking chat exists on service bookings and stays, so it always works the way you expect.
Reminders
For a confirmed viewing, Rentor reminds you 24 hours before and again 2 hours before, so a confirmed slot is hard to forget.
Need to cancel?
Cancel the viewing (from your Viewings page — on your dashboard, or under Your account as a member — or the phone app) rather than simply not showing up. The landlord gets their slot back, and your record stays clean. Repeated no-shows lower your trust score, which future landlords can see.
For landlords: viewing hours and instant confirmation
On your property's Viewings tab (web) or the property screen (app) you can set viewing hours — the weekly windows prospects may book, per property. Leave them unset and the sensible default applies (Mon–Sat 8 AM–6 PM). You can also switch on auto-confirm so in-hours requests confirm instantly; each person can hold only one upcoming viewing per property, and no-shows count against their trust score, so the switch is safe to try.
After the viewing
If it's the one, tell the landlord during the visit. They can then invite you to the unit on Rentor, which sets up your tenancy, lease and rent ledger — see Starting a tenancy. From there you'll pay rent by M-Pesa and get a receipt for every shilling.
