How everything works.

Every feature explained properly — for tenants, landlords, agencies, hosts and service providers.

For landlords

Publishing listings & boosts

Once a unit is listed, it appears on Rentor's public marketplace where renters can browse it, save it and book viewings. Here's how publishing works — and how to push a listing to the top when you need a tenant fast.

Before you can publish

Three things must be in place:

  1. Your account is verified and the property is verified — see Getting verified.
  2. At least 4 photos in total between the property and the unit. If you try to list with fewer, Rentor tells you how many you have and where to add more.
  3. The unit is not occupied. You can't advertise a home someone is living in — its status must be Vacant (or Reserved).

Listing and unlisting

  1. Open the property and go to the Units tab.
  2. On the unit's row, click List. The unit gets a Listed chip and goes live on the marketplace.
  3. To take it down, click Unlist at any time — for example once you've found a tenant.

A couple of useful controls:

  • Listing expiry — set a date in the unit's edit form and the listing unpublishes itself automatically after that day. Handy if you only want to advertise for a fixed window.
  • Available from — shows renters when the unit is ready to move into.

What renters see

Your listing shows the property's photos, description, amenities, location and the unit's rent, deposit and type — along with your ✓ Verified badge. The map pin you set does double duty: the listing page shows the property on a map renters can zoom and drag, and your rent appears as a price marker on the marketplace's map search. A pin dropped in the wrong place sends viewers to the wrong gate, so check it on the Edit property tab. Renters can then request a viewing, which lands on your Viewings tab and page for you to Approve or Decline.

If you own units inside a shared block, they appear on that building's public page together with other owners' units, so renters see one clean page for the block instead of a scatter of near-identical listings.

Boosting a listing

A boost features your vacant listing at the top of marketplace search results with a ★ Featured badge — the first thing renters see.

  1. On a listed unit, click ★ Boost.
  2. Pick a duration — for example 7, 14 or 30 days.
  3. If your plan includes free boosts, Rentor tells you: "N of N free plan boosts left this month — this one's on the house" — and the boost starts instantly.
  4. Out of free credits? The same picker shows the price for each duration. Pay via M-Pesa (an STK prompt on the number you enter), card, or bank transfer where available. The boost activates the moment your payment confirms.

While a boost is running, the unit shows ★ Featured with the days remaining, and you can Cancel boost at any time. You can also manage boosts across your whole portfolio from Billing & Plans, where How your boosts performed compares how often each boosted listing was seen and opened during the boost with the same number of days before it — see Plans, billing & add-ons for what each plan includes and current pricing.

On the phone app: a listed unit shows Boost listing. It opens Feature this unit, where you spend a boost credit your plan includes — every duration costs 1 credit, and a running boost can be extended or cancelled from the same sheet. Paid boosts aren't sold in the app; when this month's credits are used up, they reset at the start of next month. To list or unlist a unit from the phone, open the unit and use the List on marketplace switch.

Hiring a photographer — and reviewing their work

Great photos rent homes, and you don't have to take them yourself. Book a Property photography, Property videography, Drone photography or 3D & virtual tours provider from the services directory — you'll see providers who market to landlords, with their ratings, pricing and trust tier. When you confirm the booking, the creator gets time-limited access to submit their shots for that property. They can never touch your listing directly.

Everything they upload lands in a review tray on the property's page, private until you decide:

  • Accept — the photo joins the listing's photos, or the video attaches to the unit. Attribution stays with the creator behind the scenes.
  • Reject — you must say why, so the creator can fix it and resubmit.

Rentor may also check a submission and publish it to your listing — you're notified straight away if that happens, and it's still your listing, so you can remove any photo or video at any time. You can also end the creator's access early from the property: anything still pending is withdrawn, while media you already accepted stays up.

Creators can later ask for their published work to come down (say, after a reshoot). The item stays live until you decide — agree and it comes off the listing, or decline with a reason.

When your creator suggests a boost

A creator whose work is on your listing can suggest you boost the unit it appears on. It's only ever a suggestion: approving it never charges you — it simply hands you into the normal ★ Boost purchase above, where your plan credits or your payment settle it exactly as if you'd started there. Decline (with a reason) and the creator is told. Either way, you decide and you pay — they're only asking.
