How everything works.

Every feature explained properly — for tenants, landlords, agencies, hosts and service providers.

Money, account & privacy

Notifications & email preferences

Rentor reaches you three ways: a notification in the app, a push to your phone, and an email. This page covers what each one carries, what you can switch off, and what always sends.

Where the settings are

  • On the website: open Settings in your dashboard and scroll to the Email notifications card.
  • In the phone app: More → Email notifications, under Settings & Account.

Every kind of email Rentor sends is listed there, each with a line saying what it carries. Two have an On / Off switch. The rest are marked Always on, with the reason beside them.

What you can switch off

  • Saved-search alerts — new homes, stays and services that match a search you saved and asked to be told about. Each saved search also has its own switch on your Saved page, and every alert email has a one-click unsubscribe for that one search. This switch is the wholesale one. See Saved searches & favourites.
  • Product news — occasional updates about new Rentor features.

A switch saves the moment you tap it. There is no Save button to forget.

What always sends, and why

EmailWhat it carries
Payments and receiptsConfirmation when a payment succeeds or fails, and your receipts
Rent and billsRent due or overdue, extra bills added to your account, and the owner's arrears digest
Viewings and bookingsConfirmations, reschedules and reminders for viewings, stays and service bookings
MessagesSomeone sent you a message on Rentor — official notices from your landlord or agent reach you here
Statements and reportsYour monthly statement and any scheduled reports
Account activityVerification decisions, invitations, and changes to who can act on your account
Your subscription and creditsA warning before your plan or free trial ends, and when SMS credits are running out

These are not newsletters. Each one is a consequence of something you are already part of — a tenancy, a booking, a plan you pay for. If a tenant could mute rent reminders, a landlord would be told the tenant was reminded when nothing arrived; if a provider could mute billing, their listing could go dark with no warning at all. So they are listed, so you can see exactly what we send, but they cannot be switched off.

One exception worth knowing: the monthly statement has its real switch on the Reports page. Turn it off there.

Security emails sit outside the list altogether. Sign-in codes, password resets and alerts about changes to your account always send — they are how you get back in, and how we tell you if somebody else tries.

Push notifications

Push is something you turn on, on the phone itself:

  1. In the app, open Notifications (the bell, or More → Notifications).
  2. On the Get notified card, tap Turn on, and allow notifications when your phone asks.

If it doesn't work, the card says why — most often notifications are switched off for Rentor in your phone's own settings, and nothing inside the app can override that.

To stop push, open More → Privacy & data and switch Push notifications off. The same card is honest about one thing: to reach your lock screen, a notification travels through Expo and then Apple or Google, so its title and text leave Kenya on the way. Turning push off stops that. Your notifications still appear inside the app either way.

Signing out of the app stops push to that phone.

SMS

Rentor sends you a text only for things that must arrive: a one-time code, a password-reset link, or an official notice from your landlord where they have chosen to reach you by SMS as well as in-app. These are not marketing and there is no bulk texting to tenants from Rentor itself.

If you are a landlord or agency sending texts to your tenants, that is a different thing and it costs SMS credits — see Reaching tenants by SMS & email.

"I am not getting emails at all"

Work down this list before opening a ticket:

  1. Check your spam folder, and mark us "not spam" if we are in there — that fixes it for good.
  2. Check the address on your account is the one you are watching. It is under Profile.
  3. Confirm your email address. An unconfirmed address limits some outbound mail. If you never got the confirmation, the verify banner has a Resend on it.
  4. If it is a saved-search alert or product news you are missing, check its switch is On in Email notifications.
  5. Still nothing? Open a support ticket under Signing in & account access and say which email you expected and roughly when.

"I am getting too many"

Start with the two switches above. For saved-search alerts, the quicker fix is usually the search itself: on your Saved page, change it from Daily to Weekly, or untick Email and Push for that one search.

If an email you have switched off is still arriving, that is a bug worth a ticket — quote the subject line.
