For tenants
Paying rent
Paying rent on Rentor takes about a minute, and every confirmed payment updates your ledger instantly and issues a receipt. Rentor never takes a cut of your rent.
Before you pay
Open Rent & Payments. The top of the page shows your outstanding balance in red — or "You're all caught up. Asante!" if you owe nothing. Three buttons sit beside it: "Pay via M-Pesa", "Pay via card" and "Pay via bank". The amount is pre-filled with what you owe, and you can change it — pay part now, part later if you need to.
If the card and bank buttons are greyed out, your landlord hasn't switched those methods on yet — pay via M-Pesa.
Pay via M-Pesa
- Tap "Pay via M-Pesa".
- Check the Amount (KES) and the M-Pesa phone number. It's filled in with your account number, but you can change it — or pick a number you've paid from before. Paying from a spouse's line or the SIM the float is on is ordinary. See The M-Pesa number you pay from.
- Tap "Send payment prompt".
- The screen says "Check your phone" — an M-Pesa prompt pops up on that number.
- Enter your M-Pesa PIN to approve. Already approved and impatient? "Check again" asks M-Pesa straight away.
- Within moments you'll see "Payment confirmed" — your ledger is updated and a receipt has been generated.
Pay by card
- Tap "Pay via card" and confirm the amount. The card fee for that exact amount is shown before you commit.
- Tap "Continue to card checkout" — you're taken to a secure card checkout (Visa or Mastercard).
- Complete the payment there. Your ledger updates the moment the payment is confirmed.
Pay by bank
- Tap "Pay via bank" and confirm the amount. Any fee is shown before you commit.
- Tap "Get bank details" — you're taken to a secure bank checkout to complete the transfer from your bank.
- The payment is confirmed automatically once it settles, and your ledger updates.
If something goes wrong
The waiting screen tells you honestly where things stand:
- "Payment not completed" — the prompt failed, timed out or was cancelled, and the reason is shown. When M-Pesa has confirmed that attempt is dead, a "Try again" button appears.
- "Still confirming…" — networks can be slow. Tap "Check again", or close the window: if money left your account, the payment posts to your ledger on its own as soon as it lands. You won't be offered "Try again" while the first attempt could still go through — don't pay twice.
- A payment needing a closer look. Occasionally a payment needs checking by the support team before it posts. It's flagged automatically — no action needed from you, and you won't lose money.
A payment that failed stays in your Transaction history with its reason, so you can see later what happened.
Paying outside the app
Paid in cash, by bank transfer, or straight to the landlord's paybill? Either side can put it on the record:
- Your landlord records it. It posts to your ledger at once, you get a notification, the money lands oldest-month-first like any other payment, and a receipt is still issued.
- You report it. Under the pay buttons, tap "Already paid another way? Tell your landlord". Say how you paid, the amount, the date and the M-Pesa code or reference, attach proof if you have it, and send. It appears under "Reported payments" as pending — your balance only moves when your landlord confirms it, and you can Withdraw a report you made by mistake.
The full story, including what happens if a report is declined, is in Cash & payments made outside Rentor.
Your receipts
Every confirmed payment — rent or deposit — gets a numbered receipt like RNT-2026-000123. Find them in "Transaction history" on the Payments page: tap "View" to open one, or the "PDF" button to save it. Need a whole year's worth for a visa or a loan application? "Extract my receipts for a period" at the top of the page pulls them together. More in Receipts & history and How money moves.
On the phone app: the Payments tab shows the same ledger and history. Tap Pay rent, choose M-Pesa, Card or Bank, and it works exactly the same way — for M-Pesa, send the prompt, enter your PIN, done. Already paid another way? Tell your landlord is on the same tab.
