Finding a home
Searching the marketplace
The marketplace is where you find long-term rentals across Kenya — and you don't need an account to browse. Search, filter and open as many listings as you like; you only sign in when you're ready to book a viewing.
Start from the home page
The home page opens on four doors. "Find a home" takes you straight to the marketplace; under the doors is one search box that understands places:
- Start typing a town, an estate or a county — Kilimani, Ruaka, Kiambu. Rentor suggests real places as you type.
- Tap a suggestion and you're on the results for that exact area. Or type a property name and tap "Search".
- Optional: once the list opens, pick a budget first — "≤ 20K", "≤ 40K", "≤ 70K" or "≤ 120K" — and it carries through to the results.
Your recent searches are remembered on that device, so the second visit is one tap. You can also tap any county under "Browse by county", or open "Homes" in the header to start with everything.
Filters
On the marketplace, filters sit above the results and apply as you change them — the count updates live, and the page link updates too, so you can share or save a search.
- Search box — estate, town or property name.
- Location — drill down from a county to a town to an estate for a precise area.
- Rent — set a minimum and maximum, or tap a preset.
- Type — bedrooms, property type and unit type, from bedsitters and studios up to maisonettes.
- More — amenities (pick as many as you need, such as parking, borehole water or security), furnished or unfurnished, Available by (homes you can move into by a date you choose — it includes units that are available now), and Verified listings only.
On a phone, all of these sit behind one "Filters" button.
Tap "Clear all" any time to start fresh — or "☆ Save this search" to keep the whole set of filters, reopen it later in one tap, and be told when something new matches. See Saved searches & favourites.
Next to the button, a small Rentals | Stays | Student switch flips between long-term rentals, short stays and student housing.
List and map
On a computer, results show as a list on the left with a live map on the right. It is a real map: drag it to move, and scroll or pinch to zoom right in on a street. Hovering a card highlights its pin, and clicking a pin scrolls to its card.
To search where you're looking, move the map and tap "Search this area" — the results now follow the map, and a small "Map area · clear ×" chip appears so you can go back to searching everywhere.
On the mobile website, a floating button switches between "List" and "Map".
On the phone app: members browse from the Listings tab and tenants from Explore, with a filter sheet for narrowing your search. The map button opens Map search — drag to move, pinch to zoom (or use the zoom buttons), tap the locate button to centre on where you are, then Search this area.
Prefer to watch?
The "Video mode" button on the marketplace drops you into Discover with your filters carried over, so the feed shows only homes that match your search.
Sorting
Next to the results count, choose how to sort:
- "Recommended" — the default mix.
- "Newest" — freshest listings first.
- "Rent: low to high" or "Rent: high to low".
What the badges mean
- Verified — the property and its owner have passed Rentor's verification checks. Staff verify listings, usually within 24 hours of the landlord submitting.
- Featured — the landlord has promoted this listing, so it appears near the top of results.
- Building — a block whose units belong to different landlords, shown as one card. See Property & building pages.
The heart on a card saves it to your shortlist — see Saved searches & favourites. Homes you opened recently are kept in a strip above the results, so you can find that one flat again.
No matches?
If you see "No homes match those filters", try widening your budget, removing an amenity, or searching a different area — new listings land daily. The same panel offers "Clear all filters" and points you to short stays, student housing and services in case one of those is what you need.
When something catches your eye, open it — here's what you'll find on a listing, and how to book a viewing.
