Set up your landlord account

Use the Get your portfolio live checklist on your overview to take a new landlord account from sign-in to collecting rent.

← All tutorials · 2 min read

This is for landlords who have just signed in for the first time. It covers the Get your portfolio live checklist on your overview, not creating the account itself, and at the end you will know each setup step and where to do it.

1. Find your setup checklist

When you sign in as a landlord, Rentor opens on your overview. Until your account is fully set up, a card titled Get your portfolio live sits at the top, counting your progress, for example "3 of 7 done". Each unfinished step is a link straight to the page where you do it. A step is ticked off by the time you come back to the overview, with no refresh needed.

2. Confirm your email and get verified

The first two steps are:

  • Confirm your email address.
  • Get your account verified.

Tap each step on the card to go to the right page. Verification is explained in Getting verified. Both steps are required, so start here.

3. Add your first property and its units

Click + Add property at the top right of the overview, or go to Properties in the sidebar. The form is a short wizard, one screen per question, with Back always there. It keeps a draft as you go, so if you are interrupted it offers to resume where you stopped. Then add the units inside it. For a single home, the one unit is created for you.

4. Set up how you get paid

Open Rent & Payments, under Money in the sidebar. On the Payout settings card, choose M-Pesa or Card & bank and click Set up. You need two-factor authentication and a fresh code before anything is saved. The row shows Under review until Rentor's team approves it, then Live ✓. From then on, rent goes straight into your own account. Rentor never holds it.

5. Invite a tenant and publish a listing

The last two steps are Invite your first tenant and Publish a listing. The first five steps are required, but these two are not for everyone. A fully let building has nothing to advertise. If a step does not apply to you, tap its Not for me link.

6. Put the card away when you are done

Click Hide if you want the card out of your way. Once every step is done, it disappears for good. Below where it sat, your overview shows four numbers for the month: Occupancy, Collected this month, Arrears and Active maintenance.

With payouts live and a tenant invited, you are ready to collect rent. To learn more about following payments, read Collecting rent.
